A story of love, loss, and hope
An untold story of silent grief:
12 years ago, a lady joggled between nursing school, job, family, and a 38-week pregnancy. Looking forward to the arrival of her new-born like every parent who's expecting.
Then came the morning of 11/26/13, it was time for prenatal visit. Mother and baby were doing great. Baby's heartbeats very loud and clear from the monitor; no concerns, the day went well.
The next day, 11/27/2013, mother began to have some contractions. She thought, "oh perhaps I am in labor." She gathered some food items and decided to prepare a variety of soups to be kept in the freezer and be used after delivery and return from the hospital. Later did she know that this was the beginning of a tragedy.
Contractions continued through the night of 11/27/2013 into the morning of 11/28/2013, as they became stronger. A phone call made to the nurse with description of contractions led to advice of waiting till contractions became active, specific minutes apart. Contractions at this point became unbearable and this lady had to head to the hospital.
The spouse who was driving took his wife to the labor area to be checked in first and then took their two other kids to stay with grandma. Upon arrival at the labor area, another pregnant lady who was waiting advised this lady to be seen first as she seemed to be in more discomfort, than the one who was already waiting. "Oh no, you should be seen first, you seem to be having more discomfort than I am." Nice people do exist.
At this point, this lady was assisted in the hospital bed to be assessed. Vital signs, baby heartbeat, etc. Equipment was set up in case of emergency c-section as there was a concern for hearing the baby's heartbeat. Nurses and physicians came in one after another as it was difficult to detect the baby's heartbeat. The heartbeat was gradually fading away. "Who has been seeing you?" Said one of the physicians. The lady called the name and pointed to her gynecologist who was also present in the labor and delivery area. The lady went on to explain how she was seen two days prior to and how the baby's heartbeat was loud and clear with no concerns. The spouse was also back at this point and was present in the delivery room.
Now, the sad part. The room became quiet. "We are very sorry. There is no heartbeat." The healthcare professionals pronounced. This was a very dark moment. What? The heartbeat! There was no heartbeat! They had lost the baby. Unbelievable!
It became even harder. As this lady continued to weep, she needed to gather the courage to deliver her baby, her lifeless baby. Though she knew that there was no hope of holding her baby listening to the cry of her baby—a moment that is usually priceless after delivery of a baby, she still had to go through the natural delivery process. This lady mourned her baby as she held her lifeless baby on her breast as the norm.
There was a naming ceremony, the moments were recorded.
Now, the hardest moment, leaving the hospital without her baby. Flashback of every scene continued. A very tough time. But this lady continued to hold on and trust God. Praying and hoping for strength. And God provided this strength.
Though this lady had two other kids, this was different, every pregnancy is different. You have a special connection with every baby you carry.
For 12 unbroken years, this lady carried this silent grief, gracefully. No courage to even watch the recording of those moments. For 12 long years, this lady lived with an untold story: "The heartbeat."
